The Cape Cod Way: House Names and Quarter Boards

On Cape Cod, many houses have a name with a quarter board displaying that name on the house. We’re thrilled to announce that the our quarter board has been officially installed at our new home (7.30.25), and “Rantum Scoot” now proudly displays its name for all to see! For those wondering about our unique house name, “rantum scoot” is a local Nantucket term we discovered during our years living on the island. In the whaling times of the 19th century, “A Nantucketer didn’t just go for a walk on a Sunday afternoon—he went on a “rantum scoot,” which meant an excursion with no definite destination, a leisurely journey guided by curiosity and the spirit of adventure.” How perfectly this captures our own journey! Building this Cape Cod dream home has been our very own rantum scoot—an adventure that led us exactly where we were meant to be. As we begin this exciting new chapter in the place of our dreams, living in our dream house, we couldn’t think of a more fitting name to grace our quarter board. Every time we see “Rantum Scoot” displayed on our home, we’re reminded that the best destinations are often the ones we discover along the way.

We are almost there. There are still a number of items to finish, but the end of the construction journey is in sight. More updates to come before the reveal of the finished rooms and features. If only we could move in now – the central A/C would have been nice this week where we have experienced temperatures about as high as they get on the Cape.
